Significance of Universal Children's Day

It is a special day to embrace childhood. Children under the age of 18 are given a holiday or made guests for the fun activities organized at educational institutes. It is to spread love to all the children. These innocent beings receive a message that they are precious. Loved for what they are and all their deeds. Few Academic institutes provide rest to the kids by a declaration of a holiday. Rest organize fun events and competitions to display appreciation. 

Child Rights in India

The government of India has implemented child rights for the benefit of future generations. let's look at a few. 

  • Right to survival

The right aims at the child to be born and receive basic needs; food, shelter, clothing. Every child has the right to receive education, healthy nutritional food. It also promotes the right to live with dignity. 

  • Right to protection

The right aims to protect children from all kinds of harm. Every child is to be protected from sexual and any other sort of physical violence. It also encourages protection of children from neglect by parents and guardians. It discourages the exploitation of children in any way; physical or emotional. No child is to be degraded and addicted to drugs. 

  • Right to development

The right aims to encourage the development of the child emotionally, physically and academically. A child also has the right to receive the necessary support from family and guardians for their development. This right also creates space for the child to participate in recreational activities and cultural activities. 

  • Right to participation

The right provides freedom for the child to have access to information and have his own opinions. The right also encourages the expression of thoughts and the right to be associated. One important segment is the right to the involvement of a child in decision making that directly or indirectly involves the child; religious, social matters.

The government of India has policies even for the disabled, which indicate the right to enjoy rights equally and participate along with everyone. The government has also provided reservations in various fields for the upliftment of the individual. The government of India also provide certification of disability depending on type and degree for exploration of opportunities. The certificates are to avail benefit from various schemes and policies set for them.

Celebration of Universal Children's Day

Institutes conduct cultural and educational events for children. Children's day is such an event that creates excitement and fun, days before the actual day, as it involves students' practice sessions and training sessions. These practice sessions are the most loved and attended by participants and non-participants. Participants attend for practice. The non-participants attend to skip boring classes. The fun part about being a kid is to enjoy life without huge burdens except for obtaining good grades either in Arts, Sports or Academics.

Institutions conduct Marathons, Elocution, essay writing, drawing, crafting competitions before the celebration day. Prize distribution will be organized on children's day.

  • China 

The Chinese government initiated children's appreciation in 1949 by granting a half-day leave on 1 June. Later the day was declared as a full day in 1956.

  • USA

Children's day is celebrated on the second Sunday of every June. It was first conducted by priest Charles H Leonard. He shared his intention to dedicate a day for children for baptizing and promote religion. The first celebrations were held in 1856. Later, in 2000, President Bill Clinton revised the children's day to 8 October. In 2001, President George W Bush declared 3 June as children's day. However, the second Sunday of June is observed as children's day.

  • India

India celebrates children's day on 14 November of every year. It is marked on the first birth anniversary of India's first prime minister. Jawaharlal Lal Nehru, the then Prime Minister, believed children's efforts play a crucial role in nation's growth. Pandit Nehru passed away in 1964. In the same year, a resolution was passed to honour Chacha Nehru and declare 24 November for children. 

  • South Africa

National children's day is observed in South Africa. The first Saturday in Nov is dedicated to the promotion of child rights and welfare. It is a day to remind that children have the right to be live without abuse, exploitation. 

  • Brazil

Brazilians celebrate children's day on 12 October. The day is observed every year to mark children's roles and rights. This day is also known as "Our lady of Aparecida" day due to the fact that it coincides with a holiday for the Saint patron of Brazil. On this occasion, parents give gifts to children as a gesture of goodwill. 

  • Korea

5 May is observed as children's day in Korea and Japan. Children's day is a holiday for the kids. It is marked to appreciate the childhood phase. Parents and children spend time together and create memories on this day.
