About Eid-al-Fitr

According to the Islamic lunar calendar, Eid-al-Fitr, also known as Eid-ul-Fitr, is the first of the two Eids celebrated by the Muslim community across the world. It is celebrated right after the month of Ramadan. Muslims all over the world observe fast for the whole holy month (30 days), and Eid-al-Fitr is celebrated at the end as a symbol to mark the end of Ramadan, which is celebrated annually to honour Allah’s disclosure of the Quran to the Prophet Muhammad.

History of Eid-al-Fitr

According to the Islamic belief, in 610 AD, Prophet Muhammad had a sight of the angel Gabriel ascending towards him while he was praying atop a mountain. The angel stood and introduced himself to be the messenger of Allah. He then held out some pages and asked Prophet Muhammad to read out whatever was written on it, to which Prophet Muhammad replied that he couldn’t read. Then Gabriel helped him out in reciting whatever was written on the pages and advised him to always follow the path of Allah. After waking up from this vision, Prophet Muhammad was in a state of shock and disbelief. He even thought Gabriel to be an evil spirit rather than an angel. It was only because of his wife Khadijah who assuaged his concerns by reminding him of the various good things he had done in life, and thus it was possible for the angel to come and visit him, so that Prophet Muhammad follows his right path and become an example for the rest of the humans to follow. It was only then Prophet Muhammad’s belief on this visit found a place in him. During the next nights and the following several nights, angel Gabriel often pays a visit to Prophet Muhammad, teaching him the truth in the verses. He also teaches him the holy verses of the Quran and makes Prophet Muhammad understand the rule of conduct that Allah desires his devotees on Earth should follow. All these are written in the holy verses, and angel Gabriel teaches everything that is required for Prophet Muhammad to know so that he could again preach these holy teachings to the believers. It is also believed that all these sacred teachings were carried out in the month of Ramadan. Therefore, as a mark of paying their gratitude and honour to Allah and his messengers, Prophet Muhammad instructed his followers to keep a fast from sunrise till sunset, praying and asking for Allah’s forgiveness for the whole month of Ramadan and to conclude it with breaking the fast with celebrations and austerity which later on came to be known as Eid-al-Fitr. This Eid marks the end of the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and the beginning of the tenth month known as Shawwal, celebrated with great joy and prayers to Allah.

Significance of Eid-al-Fitr

This Eid is celebrated on the first day of the month of Shawwal. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad travelled from Mecca to Medina and asked the people to celebrate with joy on two days: Eid-al-Fitr and Eid-uz-Zuha. On this day, Muslims thank and pray to Allah for the holy Quran disclosed to them by the Prophet Muhammad on the night of Laylat-al-Qadr, one of the auspicious nights that fall on the month of Ramadan. Furthermore, the celebration of this Eid also marks the end of a month-long fast. And since this holy fast is one of the Five Pillars of Islam according to the Islamic faith, hence the significance of the Eid celebration. Eid-al-Fitr also marks the representation of faith, patience, devotion and purity.

Ways of celebration of Eid-al-Fitr

People around the world follow various rituals in order to celebrate Eid. Some of the common rituals are as follows:

  • Waking up early in the morning and after ‘ghusl’ (cleaning) people offer dawn prayer known as Fajr namaaz.
  • Then, the people prepare for the day by putting on new clothes. Then they head to the mosque or the ground where Eid namaaz shall be offered and wish each other ‘Eid Mubarak’ by hugging each other, which is a tradition been followed since time immemorial. After the greetings, Eid prayers begin, and people offer namaz along with the community. The namaaz is led by the Imam of the village or town mosque, and the rest follows him. He also recites the verses from the Quran and speaks about the significance of the day.
  • On this day, Muslims across the world pay ‘zakat’ or ‘fitra’. It is a charity that must be made before the beginning of the Eid prayers, as this donation is provided to the people in need so that they too can take part in Eid celebrations.
  • After the namaaz, people return home to their family members and exchange gifts. It is very popular amongst young children. The elders in the family offer them ‘eiddi’ either as gifts or money.
  • Then the family and friends get together for a meal. Various kinds of sweets and delicacies are prepared for this day. People also offer food to the economically weaker section.
