Introduction of Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is celebrated globally on December 10th every year. It commemorates the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) in the year of 1948. The document consisting of the Human Rights has been translated to more than five hundred languages worldwide. History of Human Rights Day

Human Rights Day is observed globally on December 10th to commemorate the establishment of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The United Nations General Assembly passed a resolution on December 4th, in the year 1950. This resolution called all the countries and the interested organizations to come together and commemorate the Declaration of Human Rights on December 10th and observe this day as Human Rights Day. It would be celebrated on the anniversary of this date every year. Every year, a new theme would be chosen for the celebration of this day in order to draw attention and spread awareness about human rights. 1968 was officially known as International Year for Human Rights.

Human Rights Day also marks several demonstrations and protests for upholding human rights, especially in countries where there is a breach of human rights and people are not treated fairly. There were demonstrations and protests in Taiwan in the year of 1979 and in Mongolia in the year 1989 on Human Rights Day. This helped them to replace the existing communist government in both of the countries. 

In the year of 1983, Raul Alfonsin, the President of Argentina, took his office on December 10th and marked the end of the dictatorship of the military, which violated the human rights. 

Another important event that occurred on Human Rights Day was Nelson Mandela, the President of South Africa, signed the post-apartheid Constitution on December 10th in the year 1966. Since then, South Africa has observed Human Rights Day on March 21st, in memory of the Sharpeville Massacre. 

In the year 2004, the International Humanist and Ethical Union adopted the Human Rights Day.

For example, if the theme is poverty, then the main motive of the celebration would be eradicating poverty and spreading awareness about how we can help those who are in need. Celebrations Around the World:

• Lebanon- Human Rights Day in Lebanon was celebrated by organizing a concert by the National Higher Conservatory of Music. The Lebanese Philharmonic Orchestra performed in this concert, and the event was co-produced by the United Nations Human Right's regional office in Beirut. 
• Serbia- Human Rights Day in Serbia was celebrated by one hundred and fifty participants, consisting of political leaders, independent organizations, and regional as well as international institutions. 
• Belgium- More than one thousand people attended the Human Rights Day celebration in Belgium. This day was marked by an interactive performance by the Dutch Multimedia Group, and it was called Shine Your Light. During this performance, people were given lights using which they could answer questions displayed on the screen.
