Introduction of International Nurses Day

Every year on May 12, International Nurses Day is observed. Florence Nightingale, possibly the most well-known nurse in the world, was born on this day in 1820. She became an English nurse, a social reformer, and a statistician who laid the foundations for today's nursing. In the midst of the terrible coronavirus pandemic, International Nurses Day takes on new meaning. Nurses are the backbone of hospitals and clinics, caring for tens of thousands of COVID-19 patients for months at a time. They have done so by risking their lives. International Nurses Day is a fantastic opportunity to express our heartfelt gratitude to them. According to the ICN (International Council of Nurses), COVID-19 had inflamed more than 1.6 million healthcare workers in 34 countries as of December 31, 2020. Professional practice, Regulation, and Socio-financial Welfare are the three main pillars of the ICN.

International Nurses Day is held on May 12 to honor nurses. Nurses are essential caregivers in a prosperous society. During this pandemic, their outstanding contribution has served to inspire their perseverance and hard work in the field of nursing. 

May 12 became chosen to commemorate the birth anniversary of Florence Nightingale, the founding father of modern nursing, in 1974.

Who was Florence Nightingale?

Nightingale went on to become a social reformer and statistician in addition to being a nurse. She gained popularity because of her work as a nurse during the Crimean War. During the war, she served as a nurse supervisor and teacher. She played an instrumental role in the establishment of a hospital for wounded infantrymen in Constantinople. Nursing received favorable recognition as a result of her efforts, and she became a Victorian cultural icon. In 1860, the status quo of Nightingale's nursing college at St. Thomas Hospital in London became the inspiration for cutting-edge nursing. It became the world's first secular nursing school, later becoming a part of King's College London. The Florence Nightingale Pledge, which new nurses take, and the Florence Nightingale Medal, which is the highest international recognition for nurses, have been named in her honor as a result of her pioneering efforts.

She also worked to improve the health of all sections of British society, advocated for increased starvation relief in India, and assisted in the repeal of harsh prostitution laws in the United Kingdom.

The International Nurses Day became named after Florence Nightingale, and it was only fitting.

History of International Nurses Day

Florence Nightingale, also known as the Lady with the Lamp, was the founding father of modern nursing. She began her career as a nurse in-fee of British and allied soldiers wounded during the Crimean War. Florence Nightingale spent the majority of her time, often late into the night, worrying and comforting the injured. She became the first to establish formal nursing education. In 1860, the Nightingale School of Nursing, London's first nursing faculty, opened its doors.

• The Institute for Protestant Deaconesses, the first clinic schooling faculty for nurses, was established in Kaiserwerth, Germany, in 1846.
• Florence Nightingale made her rounds at night, carrying a lamp for illumination. 'The Lady with the Lamp' has become a nickname for her. During the Crimean War, she played an important role in nursing care and advocated for more sanitary clinic practices.
• Although Nurses Day is a recognized holiday in the United States, it is not a federal holiday.
• Dorothy Sutherland worked for the US Department of Health, Education, and Welfare when she proposed Nurses Day to President Dwight D. Eisenhower in 1953. The proclamation was not signalled by Eisenhower. President Nixon did not make an official proclamation for Nurses Week until 1974.
