Introduction of World Grandparents Day
We celebrate National Grandparents Day on the first Sunday after Labor Day. The date for this year is September 11. We have a full day dedicated to our grandparents, just like Mother's Day and Father's Day. Grandparents and children have a special bond that has been proven to help grandparents stay longer and children become more emotionally resilient. Grandparents Day is an opportunity to celebrate that bond and spend some quality time with your immediate family.

History of World Grandparents Day
Russell Capper, then nine years old, wrote President Richard Nixon a letter in 1969 requesting that an afternoon be set aside to honour grandparents. On June 12, 1969, he received a letter from Rose Mary Woods, the President's Personal Secretary, with the following message: "Dear Russell, In your letter to President Nixon, you express your gratitude. Your suggestion for a Grandparent's Day is well-received. However, the President only issues proclamations specifying specific dates for special observances when a Congressional resolution enables him to do so. Regards, Regards, Regards, Regards, Regards, Regards, Regards, President's Personal Secretary, Rose Mary Woods."
- Marian McQuade's involvement with seniors is credited with kickstarting National Grandparents Day in 1956.
