Introduction of Rio Carnival

Carnivals bring joy and people together. The colourful costumes, the music shows, the folklore performances not only attract the visitors but also add the element of sharing knowledge about rituals and cultural heritage to the tourists. The Brazilians celebrate such events-week encompassing fun, display of culture and traditions. This carnival is called the Rio Carnival and is known to be the biggest carnival in the world. Let us shed some light on the amazing carnival.

History of Rio Carnival

Greek celebrated festivals honouring Dionysus, the god of wine. Following them, Romans adopted the tradition to show respect to Gods, Bacchus and Saturnalia. Catholicism rose, which led the people to celebrate the festival in a more grandeur way before Easter. The carnival is believed to be originated from the Portuguese celebration 'Entrudo'. Rio Carnival ball was first held in 1840. The carnival included dance performances: waltz and polka.

Samba was introduced in 1917. The influence of catholic is obtained from the expression "Carne Vale", meaning "farewell to meat". It is the 40-day period where eating meat is restricted until Easter.  Carnival balls of Rio Carnival are inspired by the popular balls of Italy and Portugal. Many African workers and slaves were brought in from Portugal. The enslaved Africans followed their culture even in Brazil, which is why the carnival has a touch of African traditions and Samba.
