Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, commonly known as ‘Mahatma’ Gandhi and also renowned today as the Father of the Nation (India), was born into a Hindu Modh family in Porbandar, Gujarat in 1869.
2nd October, his birthday, is observed as a national holiday in India every year.
He firmly believed in the principle of Satyagraha to fight for Indian independence against the British. For the same, he was arrested many times. He even used fasting as a method to influence other Indians to join his non-violent movement. His efforts yielded results, and India gained independence in 1947.
On 30th January 1948, Mahatma Gandhi was assassinated in the compound of Birla House by Nathuram Godse, an advocate of Hindu nationalism. His last words were "Hey Ram." And this is how a great soul departed the world.
