Introduction of World Autism Awareness Day

2nd April is celebrated as World Autism Awareness Day every year. Adopted by the United Nations Organization in the year 2007, World Autism Day aims to improve the lives of those affected by Autism so that they can lead a normal life like other people and get equal opportunities without being treated in a different or hostile manner.

History of World Autism Awareness Day

Since the United Nations Organization has been established, it has been officially dedicating and designating certain days of the year to the people who have been affected by various diseases or some kind of disorder in the body, including developmental disabilities and learning differences.

After the establishment of the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities in the year 2008, the need for human rights for all was highlighted. This organization's main principle and aim were to ensure that every person with any kind of disability would be entitled to enjoy all the fundamental freedoms and human rights that every normal person enjoys. It also encourages them to show some respect for their inherent dignity. The Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities believes that it is very important to create a safe, caring, and sympathetic world for the people who are affected with disabilities.

The United Nations Organizations collectively agreed to celebrate 2nd April as World Autism Awareness Day in 2007. This day is observed to throw light on the necessity to improve the quality of the lives of those who are affected with Autism so that they can live a life with meaning and consider themselves an important part of the society we live in. The resolution for commemorating the World Autism Awareness Day was passed on 1st November, in the year of 2007 and passed on 18th December, in the year 2007.

Significance of World Autism Awareness Day

The extent of Autism is very high and due to the lack of proper knowledge of this disorder has a tremendous effect on those who are suffering from it, their families and other people surrounding them. The social stigma and discrimination involved in neurological disorders are prominent and most people refuse to talk about it or accept it. Most of these disorders are not properly understood, which is why the people affected do not receive therapy or proper treatment. This is why it is very important to educate the general public about the symptoms and the various treatments available to heal the disorder.

World Autism Awareness Day aims in spreading awareness about Autism, symptoms and other effects of this disorder. The reasons why spreading awareness is important are:

  • Spreading awareness leads to a proper understanding of the disorder. Several years ago, people would have laughed at a child or an adult showing symptoms of Autism like a problem in communication or awkward social skills, but with the increase in knowledge and awareness about the disorder, people tend to understand the situation. They try to care for and help those who are affected instead of mocking them.
  • Awareness can evoke more empathy and support. Some common symptoms of Autism Spectrum Disorder are repetitive behaviour or awkward social skills, but the symptoms and conditions can vary from person to person. It could be the lack of the ability to use proper gestures, change in the tone of voice, lack of eye contact, incapability to process or interpret facial expressions. Autism may also affect the sense of touch, taste, light, smell, etc.; often when the child affected with Autism is seen or appears to be acting out or throwing a fit; they might just be dealing with an overload of senses. In this case, they should be shown a lot of kindness and empathy so that life becomes a bit easier for them as well as their families.
  • Increased empathy can lead to more acceptance. If people take the initiative to accept the people affected with Autism, then they will feel good about themselves and feel like they belong somewhere. It is very important for their families to show empathy to them, as it might provide them with moral support and make their lives easier.
