The original idea for celebrating World Book and Copyright Day was adopted by Vicente Clavel Andres, who was a Valencian author. He wanted to dedicate this day to the legendary author Miguel de Cervantes, whose death anniversary was on 23rd April. 

In the year of 1995, the United Nations General Assembly decided to mark 23rd April as World Book and Copyright Day. The date of the 23rd was very significant because this date marked the birth and death anniversary of various authors around the world, like William Shakespeare, Josep Pla, Inca Garcilaso de la Vega was born on this day. On the other hand, authors like Haldor K Laxness, Manuel Mejia Vallejo and William Shakespeare passed away on this day. 

The date was finalized by the United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) at the conference in Paris in 1995 to pay homage to all the legendary authors worldwide. Today, this day is commemorated by over a hundred countries worldwide and several schools, universities, and other institutions. 

Since 2000, United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization, and some professional organizations have decided to organize the World Book Capital City. A certain city is chosen every year, which takes the initiative to celebrate this day until 23rd April of the following year.
