In the 1970′s I made horses out of real mud and sticks. They were, in part, meant to reflect how much a horse is part of his environment. I combined the figure and the ground.

What is it that you most fear hearing about your work?

Love stories have endings, but love itself is ongoing and continually warped and renewed by the people who do the loving.

We actually grew closer as friends years later when we started doing personal appearances together. I stayed in touch with Andy [Griffith] and Don [Knotts] until they passed away.

I discovered that the people of the North are different and there's no way you can make a person from the North similar to a Southerner. They're two different worlds.

The mediocrity of everything in the great world of today is simply appalling. We live in intellectual slums.

I actually think storyboards are great. I don't draw well enough to do them myself. I've only used storyboards a couple of times.

To be somebody, you must last.

People say to me, "Who's your favorite kind of photographer?" Or "Who would be your favorite photographer to have in a workshop?" And I always say, "My Dad."

Quarterbacks have to ask the crowd to quiet down. Pitchers never do.

I've never had a problem with people paying attention to what you're doing and say they find that they liked it.
