I used to think that I could never lose anyone if I photographed them enough. In fact, my pictures show me how much I’ve lost.

My desire is to preserve the sense of people’s lives, to endow them with the strength and beauty I see in them. I want the people in my pictures to stare back.

For me it is not a detachment to take a picture. It's a way of touching somebody - it's a caress… I think that you can actually give people access to their own soul.

I think the wrong things are kept private

My work shows the beauty in so many different kinds of people because I never photograph anyone who I don't think is beautiful. I never take an intentionally mean picture.

In wartime people took action because of what they believed in. In peacetime people were driven by their private concerns.

Recognising our own mistakes helps us to empathise non-judgementally with others and helps enable us to understand their issues.

But you should never jump unless you know you can fly, or at least float. Nobody wants to fall. That’s how you end up hurt.

And I believe that the best learning process of any kind of craft is just to look at the work of others.

Someone who really wants to discover themselves has to be particularly careful about the use and abuse of power. But even your average human being just passing through another life has to be careful.

Before this war is over, I intend to be a Major General or a corpse.

To me the pain and the blood are merely means of artistic expression.

We like to invent new disciplines or look at new problems, and invent bandwagons rather than jump on them.

You can insure yourself up to your eyeballs, but if you don't take risks, what's the point? You have to enjoy life.
