[Shoji] Hamada seldom drew an exact drawing of a pot that he was going to make.

We'll be potters, we'll be painters, we'll be textile designers, we'll be jewelers, we'll be a little this, a little of that. We were going to be the renaissance people [when we were young].

In fact, I believe to a certain extent a person today who starts with just clay, with no drawing and no painting and no figure drawing, still-life drawing, various things, they miss a great deal.

So I very quickly stopped almost all decoration. I was interested in the three-dimensional form of the pots, but my decoration was nonexistent.

Every pot is not going to be a masterpiece.

Alix [ MacKenzie] had stopped teaching because we had a child and she stayed home to take care of the baby, and I taught.

It was a wonderful opportunity. And so for two and a half years we lived with [Bernard] Leach.

Bernard's [Leach] drawings delineated every little accent on the pot, every subtle curve and change of angle and proportion and all.

Bernard [Leach] was making pots which were duplicates of his drawing, and that was a difference of approach, which I think is quite critical to these two men [Leach and Shoji Hamada].

And as far as I know about Alix's [MacKenzie] work, I don't believe she ever did any sculptural work at all. It was always pottery.

[Sculpturing] didn't stick with me. I never felt I wanted to go on with that.

It's enough to indulge and to be selfish but true happiness is really when you start giving back.

Character is made of duty and love and sympathy, and, above all, of living and working for others.

Even in the most bold and daring acts, courage is a matter of the heart.

I wanted to go amongst gangbangers, to understand this war they were fighting amongst each other. I wanted to document it, [also] to show the human side of it.

Technology has saved us money in some circumstances, but it has really afforded us the ability to cover stories from locations we might not have been able to in the past.

You learn to control every aspect of your muscles, your face, your toes, your fingernails. And that is how you tell a story, through movement.

If you wish to know how civilized a culture is, look at how they treat it's women.

Because the state necessarily commits aggression, the consistent libertarian, in opposing aggression, is also an anarchist.

A creative life cannot be sustained by approval, any more than it can be destroyed by criticism.

Most single women have been in that situation where there is a silent guy in your group. You don't see him as boyfriend material. He's just there, but you know all the same people.
