The reproduction of mankind is a great marvel and mystery. Had God consulted me in the matter, I should have advised him to continue the generation of the species by fashioning them out of clay.

I will undoubtedly have to seek what is happily known as gainful employment, which I am glad to say does not describe holding public office.

Nothing ought more to humiliate men who have merited great praise than the care they still take to boast of little things.
